ICE (AGAIN)

In winter the lake in the park freezes over, the ice is thicker than I’ve ever seen ice. Tom is visiting and we walk round the lake twice. I wonder if he’s happier with his dad, he wanted to go and I let him. His dad’s begun another family now. A girl in a red bobble hat is ice skating. There’s no sign of any cracks. We throw bits of ice gouged from puddles on the path across the icy lake and hear them sing, high and screeching. The boys hold hands and step down onto the ice, and walk together out towards the duck island in the middle. They turn round and come back for me, holding out their hands.

‘Come on, Mum, you can do it, it’s fine, it’s really thick.’

In my mind I can hear shattering. But they’re right, the ice is thick. So I walk on ice. We all do.
